Undulating shades of orange and pink describe the volcanic terrain of Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland), showing scoria and cones (dark orange), balsatic lava streams (dark pink), and areas of clay and sandstone (peach).
Initially drawn by Hochstetter in 1859, this map was published after his return to Europe by Justus Perthes, a German publishing house that specialised in producing geographic articles and maps of locales around the world.
